Measuring water levels, discovering galaxies, or identifying plants—these are all activities that volunteers engage in alongside scientists. The poster exhibition on participatory research encompasses 19 Citizen Science projects from the University of Zurich (UZH) and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETHZ).
In a representative survey in Switzerland, about 36% of the population indicated that they would like to participate in a research project themselves. For many Citizen Scientists, contributing to current research questions and acquiring in-depth expertise is highly motivating. Citizen Science projects are often designed to be playful and can be easily combined with leisure activities such as hiking.
The inclusion of citizens in research offers great potential for science, especially in the context of digitization. The methods of data collection and processing have undergone radical changes in recent years. Thanks to mobile internet and powerful smartphones, it is now possible to collect and provide relevant research data almost anywhere.
The exhibition showcases projects from various disciplines, all of which involve citizens in their research. Five focal points can be identified: Language, Cosmos, Nature and Landscape, Human and Health, as well as History and Digitization.
The travelling exhibition was organised by the Graduate Campus of the University of Zurich and made possible with the support of the Mercator Foundation Switzerland. From 2017 to 2018 it was exhibited here:
