Carolin Anders, Biochemist

As a biochemist, Carolin Anders conducts fundamental research. She made a significant contribution to the understanding of the 3D structure of Cas9. If the structure of the enzyme Cas9 is known, its functionality and biochemical properties can be determined. The enzyme Cas9 was discovered in the context of a bacterial immune system and is used frequently in practice in the area of genome engineering because it can be programed to make a fast and precise cut in the DNA.  Thus the medical potential for Cas9 is enormous.

Carolin Anders is writing her dissertation in the lab of Prof. Jinek at the Department of Chemistry of the University of Zurich.  Carolin Anders received the Mercator Award 2015  in the area of medicine and natural sciences for her excellent research achievements.
